چکیده

We describe experiments that compared the perceived relative roughness of textured virtual walls synthesized with an accurately controlled haptic interface. Texture was modeled as a spatially modulated sinusoidal friction grating. The results indicate that both the modulation depth of the grating (A), and the coefficient of friction (μ) are strongly associated with the perceived roughness when increasing either A or μ . Changing the spatial period of the grating (l), however, did not yield consistent relative roughness judgement results, indicating that there is a weaker association.

The Impact of Unaware Perception on Bodily Interaction in Virtual Reality Environments

Unaware haptic perception is often inferred but rarely demonstrated empirically. In this paper we present evidence for effects of unaware haptic stimuli on users' motor interaction with virtual objects. Using a 3D hapto-visual virtual reality, we ran a texture-difference-recognition test in which subjects glided a pen-like stylus along a virtual surface with varying roughness. We found that sub...

The Effective Combination of Haptic and Auditory Textural Information

With the increasing availability and quality of auditory and haptic means of interaction, it is not unusual to incorporate many modalities in interfaces rather than the purely visual. Providing interface designers with the means to implement haptic-audio interfaces m...

Sensing and Displaying Spatially Distributed Fingertip Forces in Haptic Interfaces for Teleoperator and Virtual Environment Systems

This article reports a variety of sensory and perceptual consequences of eliminating, via a rigid fingertip sheath, the spatially distributed fingertip force information that is normally available during tactile and haptic sensing. Sensory measures included tactile spatial acuity, tactile force, and vibrotactile thresholds. Suprathreshold tasks included perception of roughness, perception of 2-...

Roughness and spatial density judgments on visual and haptic textures using virtual reality

The purpose of this study is to investigate multimodal visual-haptic texture perception for which we used virtual reality techniques. Participants judged a broad range of textures according to their roughness and their spatial density under visual, haptic and visual-haptic exploration conditions. Participants were well able to differentiate between the different textures both by using the rough...

Haptic texturing-a stochastic approach

All objects have a surface roughness which manifests itself as small forces when objects slide under load against each other Simulating this roughness hap tically enriches the interaction between a user and a virtual world just as creating graphical textures enhances the depiction of a scene As with graphical textures a major design constraint for haptic textures is the generation of a su cient...
